How We Are Organized

The Sierra Club was founded in 1892. It is subdivided into five levels shown below. Of these the most important are national, chapter and group. Joining the club automatically makes you a member of as many levels as exist in your area.

• National. The organization has more than 750,000 members and is headquartered in San Francisco, CA. Policy is set by a board of directors elected by the members. It publishes the bimonthly Sierra magazine.
• Regional. Regions exist for administrative purposes and are mostly invisible to members. The Southwest Region includes Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and some of west Texas. Its office is in Phoenix.
• Chapter. The Rio Grande Chapter includes all of New Mexico and the part of west Texas due south of New Mexico. It is governed by an executive committee elected by the members. It publishes the bimonthly Rio Grande Sierran newsletter containing chapter and group news.
• Group. The Rio Grande Chapter is divided into five geographic groups, each with its own elected executive committee:
  • Central New Mexico. Organization.
  • El Paso. Organization.
  • Northern New Mexico. Organization.
  • Pajarito (Los Alamos). Organization.
  • Southern New Mexico. Organization.
  Group territories are built of zip codes. But to make things simpler, we have tried to make group boundaries follow county boundaries where possible. We have three tools to help you see what group you are in:
  • Map of group boundaries.
  • List of zip code assignments in order.
  • List of zip code assignments by county.
• Branch. This is a local term for a geographical subdivision of a large group. Branches are governed by steering committees. In the Rio Grande Chapter, only the Northern New Mexico Group has branches and it has three:
  • Farmington
  • Las Vegas
  • Taos
